Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve

The concept of a 'biosphere' revolves around the needs of civil society. The CWCBR stretches from the Berg River to the Diep River at Milnerton, and encompasses the lowlands west of the N7, inclusive of Dassen and Vondeling Islands. 95% is in private ownership for economic and social survival. Little of this land benefits from any conservation protection other than by falling within a biosphere.

The CWCBR plays an integral support role to line functions in several west coast initiatives. Creation of the Fire Protection Association, publication of a guideline booklet of regulations commonly transgressed in rural society, interaction and support to the national agriculture LRAD programme in concert with the Land Claims Commission, the marketing of the Route 27 Tourism concept, to name a few.
