The Department's objectives include the administration, development and maintenance of all parks and open spaces covering over 4500 hectares, over 500 children's playgrounds and 180 recreation playing fields:Over 60 prime parks of horticultural and floral attraction
- Freeway and main arterial road landscapes and tree plantings.
- Six major natural system parks and several other natural reserves/also education resources and visitors centres an indigenous and medicinal plant nursery
- The Durban Metropolitan Openspace System (D'MOSS) which is a planned integrated system to ecologically link and incorporate over 1416 hectares of openspace from nine parks utilising existing parkland, openspace river valleys and coastal land.
- The 14.5 hectare Durban Botanic Gardens including guided tours and horticultural education programmes.
- The production of over 5 million trees, shrubs and groundcovers annually
- The cutting of overgrowth of over 4 million square metres of verge in the City
- Supporting over 300 agricultural projects, improving food security amongst the poor
