Eco-Schools operates in over 51 countries worldwide. It is an international programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), managed locally by WESSA with support from Nampak and PetroSA. Various other organisations have supported the programme which is now in its 11th year. Over 1160 schools currently participating many have which have been sustaining their projects for more 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11years!
Eco-Schools is about improving environmental management at the school, as well as environmental learning. Schools get together and undertake a project to improve some aspect of environmental management at their school. This could range from saving electricity to starting a garden; the possibilities are endless. At the same time, teachers draw on these practical projects to strengthen environmental learning at the school. Each year they strive to improve on their efforts, thereby qualifying for an internationally recognised symbol of excellence, an Eco-Schools award and ultimately the Eco-Schools Flag. Eco-Schools South Africa supports the National Curriculum and is CAPS aligned, both primary and secondary schools can sign up for the programme, and so can pre-primary schools, schools for learners with special needs, home schools and environmental clubs.
