Smith Ndlovu & Summers Attorneys is a Cape Town and Durban based specialist environmental law firm, with expertise in South African Constitutional, administrative and environmental law. The firm services an array of clients nationally and has also worked in various sub-Saharan countries including Mauritania, Angola, Swaziland, Lesotho and Namibia.

Clients include corporates, government, public sector clients, individuals, and NGOs. The firm currently employs five attorneys (Nicholas Smith, Sibonelo Ndlovu, Richard Summers, Carrie Tacon and Heinrich Muller), one candidate attorney (Michaela Lau) and has a support staff of four. All five lawyers are admitted attorneys and three have post-graduate (Masters) qualifications in environmental law, as does Ms. Lau.

The firm undertakes a variety of work including: preparation of opinions, memoranda of advice and other written deliverables; High Court litigation; due diligence reporting, appearances in fora dealing with environmental disputes; audit and legal register-related work (e.g. ISO certification); capacity-building; and a range of other work relevant to its core competences.

The firm is the first South African specialist environmental law practice which was substantively empowered by virtue of having a partner who qualifies as a historically disadvantaged individual in terms of South Africa’s employment equity and black economic empowerment legislation.
