The Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology (affectionately known as the Fitztitute) is housed within the Zoology Department of the University of Cape Town. The Fitztitute has an international reputation for research and teaching excellence in African ornithology and conservation biology.
The DST/NRF Centre of Excellence in "Birds as Keys to Biodiversity Conservation" at the Percy FitzPatrick Institute is now one of only eight nationally recognised Centres of Excellence in science and technology in South Africa. Fitztitute members are committed to developing a greater understanding of the form, functioning and conservation of Africa's rich Avian biodiversity, through the training of scientists and the pursuit of primary research, from evolutionary ecology to conservation biology.
