d2w (degrade2water) additive developed by Symphony Plastic Technologies PLC in the UK, causes plastic products such as carrier bags, refuse sacks, shrink wrap, bread bags etc to degrade totally in a predetermined period, when these items would normally remain in the environment for several centuries. d2w is in use in over 30 countries, and now also in use in South Africa. As countries such as France and others have taken legislative action against plastic carrier bags, it is inevitable that major plastic users will be compelled to recognise and take steps to minimise this pollution. Of all the plastic produced 90% is still with us; of all the plastic produced using d2w up to 2003, it has all simply disappeared.
