The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) is a multi-institutional, government-funded Earth observation network that delivers long-term reliable data for scientific research, and informs policy and management decision-making, for a knowledge society and improved quality of life.

It operates a number of distributed nodes and develops a connecting data management system on the Internet. Data sharing, education outreach and international collaboration are founding principles of SAEON. Its main purpose is to deliver long-term data, over a range of ecoregions and land uses, and information tools for the sustainable management of natural resources and habitat.

SAEON actively works towards direct social benefits, including education, environmental quality, sustainable development, and early warning systems for the prediction of hazardous environmental change. The National Research Foundation manages SAEON.
