South African National Parks (SANParks) manages a system of national parks that represent the indigenous fauna, flora, landscapes and associated cultural heritage of South Africa.
There are currently 22 national parks under SANParks’ jurisdiction (see list below).
National parks offer visitors an unparalleled diversity of tourism opportunities including game viewing, bush walks, canoeing and exposure to natural, cultural and historical experiences.
Three fundamental areas of focus- To conserve a representative sample of the country’s biodiversity
- To maintain a relationship of community upliftment and capacity building amongst people living in the areas in and around parks.
- To provide recreational outlets to the general public
SANParks recognises that viable tourism is essential to provide the financial resources required by the organisation in order to sustain its mandate.
While tourism manifests itself in many different ways, SANParks' definition involves the movement of people into the parks to interact with the environment. Once there, visitors use facilities offered by the parks and they take part in various activities in natural and pleasant surroundings.
