SANCCOB was established in 1968 in response to the increasing numbers of oiled sea birds in the Western Cape. Throughout the last 35 years, SANCCOB has responded to every major oil spill along the South Africa coast and attended to the chronic influx of ill, injured and oiled sea birds every day of every year. Since its inception, the centre has helped to treat over 82,000 seabirds, in particular the African Penguin, which is classified as 'Vulnerable' in the Red Data Book. Recent research proves that the African Penguin population is 19% higher today than it would have been in the absence of SANCCOB's efforts. Educationals and tours are offered by appointment only.
