SSI’s Environmental Sector is characterised by three broad service lines
GENERAL ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES
A key objective of this service line is to ensure that the potential negative environmental impacts of projects are identified, investigated and either eliminated or reduced and that the environmental benefits are enhanced. The General Environmental Services Unit offers independent environmental assessments, evaluations, consultations and advice.
STRATEGIC AND SUSTAINABILITY SERVICES
The Strategic and Sustainability Services Unit specifically aims to assist both the public and private sectors through pro-active strategic planning, sustainability reporting and policy formulation. The Unit also specializes in the application and implementation of tools such as Clean Development Mechanisms, Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2004), Green Buildings and environmental training to achieve the goals of sustainability.
SPECIALIST SERVICES
The key value provided by Specialist Services Unit is to highlight significant areas where environmental impacts and degradation can be expected due to the implementation of an activity or process. Input and assistance is provided to Environmental Impact Assessments, Management Plan Development, as well as Strategic Planning related activities which could affect the environment both positively or negatively.
INNOVATION
SSI has an internal innovation agenda that promotes research and development within the company that motivates staff to think of alternative project processes, implementation and execution methodologies. The company subsidises these studies, allowing staff the freedom to explore different ideas and approaches that could, ultimately, result in value added services for clients.
INTERNATIONAL WORK
Although South Africa remains the core source of environmental business SSI has been active in Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, DRC, Tanzania, Mauritius, Madagascar and The United Arab Emirates. Donor funded projects often characterise many of these assignments and thus familiarity with institutional requirements (e.g. World Bank) and home country environmental legislation in terms of environmental processes is a priority.
