VACANCY: Lecturer - Department of Oceanography, UCT - 27 July 2016

The University of Cape Town has a strong international reputation in ocean and climate research and teaching. Within the Department of Oceanography, particular areas of interest include the Agulhas and Benguela Current systems, the tropical western Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean, climate change and variability, marine biogeochemistry, severe weather and mesoscale meteorology, and modelling.

The Department seeks to appoint a lecturer with proven expertise in ocean-atmosphere interactions. An interest in coupling observations with modelling and applications of atmospheric or marine chemistry to climate would be advantageous, since both would complement and extend existing strengths within the Department.

The Oceanography Department has well developed computing facilities, a marine biogeochemistry laboratory, and access to ship time for research cruises in the South Atlantic, South Indian and Southern Oceans. A Ph.D. in Oceanography, Atmospheric Science, or related field is required together with evidence of publication in high quality research journals.

The incumbent will be expected to contribute strongly to teaching undergraduate and Honours level courses and to develop her/his own research programme with appropriate training and supervision of postgraduate students. Experience in lecturing and/or tutoring undergraduate students is desirable, as is evidence of obtaining funds to support independent research. Postdoctoral experience would be highly advantageous.

The annual remuneration package for 2016, including benefits, is R558 915. For further information regarding this position, contact Professor Isabelle Ansorge – Head of Department, email Isabelle.ansorge@uct.ac.za
