VACANCY: Project Manager – Gonarezhou Predator Project, Zimbabwe - 3 October 2016

Introduction

The Gonarezhou Predator Project (GPP) is a partnership between the African Wildlife Conservation Fund (AWCF), the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZPWMA) and the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), operating in and around Gonarezhou National Park in south eastern Zimbabwe. The GPP is a multidisciplinary project with a mandate to support the conservation of all members of the large carnivore guild in Gonarezhou National Park, and to help communities to reduce conflicts with these animals.

Job description

Gonarezhou Predator Project Manager will report to the GPP Committee, more specifically to the Senior Manager of the AWCF, but also to the senior ZPMWA and FZS focal people on the ground. The successful candidate will be based at Chipinda Pools in the Gonarezhou National Park, camping out in the park in temporary camps whenever necessary. The Project Manager will be responsible for the implementation of the GPP objectives.

Roles and Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

1) Helping to update and implement the five year strategy (objectives) for the project

2) Overseeing the GPP scouts monitoring wild dogs and other large carnivores in the Park

3) Overseeing and supporting the Chilojo Club Education Team.

4) Establishing a Human Wildlife Conflict Project in relation to the GPP’s objectives around the Park

5) Expanding the education program into schools on the Mozambican side of the park once official and appropriate structures are in place

6) Collating and analyzing all wild dog camera trap data, collar data and tourist sightings data

7) Carrying out a lion call up survey across the whole park in 2016

8) Conducting annual spoor surveys in the park to continue the long term data set

9) Writing up some of the project data and publishing articles with GPP colleagues

10) Fundraising to keep all aspects of the project going

Requirements

Essential

1) Project Management Experience

2) Fieldwork experience in Africa

3) Good data analysis and report writing skills

4) Prepared to live and work in remote and challenging conditions

5) Resourceful and innovative

6) Fundraising experience

Preferable

1) Minimum Bachelor’s degree or higher

2) GIS skills

3) Evidence of experience working with communities / community conservation

Salary US$2,000 per month

Basic accommodation provided at Chipinda Pools
